In a recent exclusive interview with NBC News, former President Donald Trump claimed credit for the strengths of the U.S. economy, while blaming the struggles on current President Joe Biden. Despite growing concerns about economic instability following a wide-ranging tariff announcement, Trump stood firm on his trade strategy.
“The tariffs have only just started to take effect,” Trump said. “They’re going to make us rich—America will become a very wealthy nation.” He added that although he takes overall responsibility, he has only been back in office for just over three months, emphasizing that the full impact of his policies is still unfolding.
This isn’t the first time Trump has tried to shift responsibility for economic downturns onto Biden. Just last week, he pointed to the first-quarter economic contraction and claimed it was a direct result of the Biden administration’s mismanagement.
Trump also repeated remarks he made earlier in the week during a Cabinet meeting, downplaying fears that tariffs could cause product shortages. “I don’t believe an 11-year-old girl needs 30 dolls,” he said. “They can have three. Kids don’t need 250 pencils—they can do just fine with five.”
